The Tree That Grew To The Moon

Our activities over the past couple of weeks have been planned utilizing the book The Tree That Grew to the Moon by Eugenie Fernandes.

Week 1
The first week we explored trees and how they grow.  I used this week to introduce our unit on living and non-living things.

The children created handprint trees.  We stamped the trunk and branches using the children's hand and arm print.  When dry, the children added construction paper pieces for the leaves.

The children drew trees.

There was a hole,
In the middle of the ground
.
The prettiest hole,
That you ever did see.

And the hole in the ground,
And the green grass grew all around, all around,
And the green grass grew all around.

And in this hole,
There was a tree.
The prettiest tree,
That you ever did see.

And the tree in the hole,
And the hole in the ground,
And the green grass grew all around, all around,
And the green grass grew all around.

And on this tree,
There was a branch.
The prettiest branch,
That you ever did see.

And the branch on the tree,
And the tree in the hole,
And the hole in the ground,
And the green grass grew all around, all around,
And the green grass grew all around.

And on this branch,
There was a nest.
The prettiest nest,
That you ever did see.

And the nest on the branch,
And the branch on the tree,
And the tree in the hole,
And the hole in the ground,
And the green grass grew all around, all around,
And the green grass grew all around.

And in this nest,
There was an egg.
The prettiest egg,
That you ever did see.

And the egg in the nest,
And the nest on the branch,
And the branch on the tree,
And the tree in the hole,
And the hole in the ground,
And the green grass grew all around, all around,
And the green grass grew all around.

And in this egg,
There was a bird.
The prettiest bird,
That you ever did see.

And the bird in the egg,
And the egg in the nest,
And the nest on the branch,
And the branch on the tree,
And the tree in the hole,
And the hole in the ground,
And the green grass grew all around, all around,
And the green grass grew all around.

 Week 2
The second week, we explored space concentrating on the moon and earth.

They made construction paper sun pictures.

We made moon pictures.  I found the idea on this website.  We added flour to white paint to create the moon and then stamped in the craters.

We watched the you tube video Life On The International Space Station as a spring board to our gravity experiments.

During outdoor play, I drew a sun and earth's orbit on the ground with chalk.  One child was the sun and the others took turns being the earth moving around the sun.  This was a great way to visualize that the earth moves and introduce the concept of day and night as well as the seasons.

Zoom, Zoom, Zoom

Zoom, zoom, zoom
We're going to the moon
Zoom, zoom, zoom
We're going to the moon
If you'd like to take a trip
Step inside my rocket ship
Zoom, zoom, zoom
We're going to the moon.

(We role played going to the moon and hunting for moon rocks - polished stones I had hidden around the room - then we boarded our ships and headed back to Earth)

Zoom, zoom, zoom
We're leaving the moon
Zoom, zoom, zoom
We're leaving the moon
If you'd like to take a trip
Step inside my rocket ship
Zoom, zoom, zoom
We're heading back to Earth.
