Pond Life

It's been crazy busy around here - the weather has been fab-u-lous so we have been getting outdoors a lot more.  Last week we explored pond life and luckily have a man-made lake within walking distance.  We headed over to the lake to find the sweetest little pair of goslings with Mommy and Daddy Canada geese.  Momma was teaching the babies how to eat and ducking their heads under the water and they frantically flapped their feet... it was so cute to watch!  We walked around the area looking for life around the pond - checking off our list pond life that we saw and pond life that we didn't see on that visit.  I used this week to spring board our unit on Living and Non-Living things so we categorized items we saw into the two groups as we walked and noticed what was around us.

Here are our super cute handprint frogs.

And our paper plate turtle shakers... we added macaroni between the two paper plates to create a musical instrument.

Some songs we enjoyed this week included...

Little White Duck

There's a little white duck
Swimming in the water
A little white duck
Doing what he ought-a
He took a bite of a lily pad
Flapped his wings and he said, "I'm glad
I'm a little white duck swimming in the water.
Quack, quack, quack!"

There's a little green frog
Swimming in the water
A little green frog
Doing what he ought-er
He jumped right off of the lily pad
That the little duck bit and he said, "I’m glad
I’m a little green frog
Swimming in the water.
Ribbet, ribbet, ribbet!"

There's a little black bug
Swimming in the water
A little black bug
Doing what he ought-er
He tickled the frog on the lily pad
That the little duck bit and he said, "I’m glad
I’m a little black bug
Swimming in the water
Blug, blug, blug!"

There's a little red snake
Sneaking through the water
A little red snake
Doing what he ought-er
He frightened the duck and the frog so bad
He ate up the the bug and he said, "I’m glad
I’m a little red snake
Sneaking through the water
Ssss, Ssss, Ssss!"

Now there’s nobody left
Swimming in the water,
Nobody left doing what they ought-er
There’s nothing left but the lily pad
The duck and the frog swam away
I’m sad
Now there’s nobody left
Swimming in the water.
"Boo, hoo, hoo!"

5 Little Ducks

5 little ducks went out to play,
Over the hill and far away
Mama Duck called "quack, quack, quack",
4 little ducks came waddling back.

1 little duck came waddling back.

1 little duck went out to play,
Over the hill and far away
Mama Duck called "quack, quack, quack",
No little ducks came waddling back.

No little ducks went out to play,
Over the hill and far away.
Daddy Duck called "quack, quack, quack
5 little ducks came waddling back.

*I switch it up between Mommy and Daddy so Daddy is not always the one 'in charge' ;)!

5 Green and Speckled Frogs

Five green and speckled frogs
Sat on a speckled log
Eating some most delicious bugs
Yum, yum
One jumped into the pool
Where it was nice and cool
Then there were four green speckled frogs
Glub, glub.

There Was a Little Turtle

There was a little turtle.
He lived in a box.
He swam in a puddle.
And he climbed on the rocks.
He snapped at a mosquito.
He snapped at a flea.
He snapped at a minnow.
He snapped at me.
He caught the mosquito.
He caught the flea.
He caught the minnow.
But he didn't catch me!

I Had a Little Turtle

I had a little Turtle
His name was Tiny Tim
I put him in the bathtub
Just to see if he could swim
He drank up all the water
He ate up all the soap
Now he is sick in bed
With a bubble in his throat
Bubble, bubble, bubble
Bubble,  bubble, POP!

To The Moon

Last week was space week and we had so much fun discovering the planets and learning about our solar system.  We concentrated on Earth, the sun, and the moon, but did discuss the planets in our solar system as well.

Outdoor play included drawing a chalk sun in the center of the driveway with orbits for the various planets.  The children became the planets orbiting the sun and through this activity, were able to gain an understanding of day and night as well as seasons.  They were able to visualize why Mercury was hot and Neptune cold.

The children painted Earth with puffy paint - we added green paint to the puffy paint and that became an experiment in itself because as soon as we added the paint, (I was afraid food colouring would stain their hands so went with paint) it thickened and became a little stretchy... very cool - TRY IT!

We also made space shuttles - I used the template found on Kids Craft Weekly and added the children's faces to the shuttle before printing it.  We glued the template to a section of paper towel tube - it fit perfectly - then we simply stuffed tissue paper in the bottom.

We experimented with dropping objects from various heights to facilitate a discussion on gravity.

Some of the songs we sang during the week included...

Blues Clues Planet Song (which opened up a discussion on why Pluto is no longer a planet... my little angels felt bad for Pluto... how cute is that!)

The Planet Song

Well the Sun's a hot star
Mercury's hot, too
Venus is the brightest planet
Earth's home to me and you
Mars is the red one
And Jupiter's most wide
Saturn's got those icy rings
And Uranus spins on its side
Neptune's really windy
And Pluto's really small
Well we wanted to name the planets
And now we've named them all.

Zoom, Zoom, Zoom

Zoom, zoom, zoom we're going to the moon
Zoom, zoom, zoom we're going to the moon
If you'd like to take a trip
Step inside my rocket ship
Zoom, zoom, zoom we're going to the moon!

Aikendrum

There was a man lived in the moon, in the moon, in the moon.
There was a man lived in the moon and his name was Aikendrum.
And he played upon a ladle, a ladle, a ladle.
He played upon a ladle and his name was Aikendrum.
And his hair was made of spaghetti, spaghetti, spaghetti.
His hair was made of spaghetti and his name was Aikendrum.
And his eyes were made of meatballs, meatballs, meatballs.
His eyes were made of meatballs and his name was Aikendrum.
And he played upon a ladle, a ladle, a ladle.
He played upon a ladle and his name was Aikendrum.
And his nose was made of cheese, cheese, cheese.
His nose was made of cheese and his name was Aikendrum.
And his mouth was made of pizza, pizza, pizza.
His mouth was made of pizza and his name was Aikendrum.
And he played upon a ladle, a ladle, a ladle.
He played upon a ladle and his name was Aikendrum.
There was a man lived in the moon, in the moon, in the moon.
There was a man lived in the moon and his name was Aikendrum.

Oh Mr. Sun

Oh, Mr. Sun, sun, Mr. Golden sun
Won't you please shine down on me
Oh, Mr. Sun, sun, Mr. Golden sun
Hiding behind the tree
These little children are asking you
To please come out so they can play with you
Oh, Mr. Sun, sun, Mr. Golden sun
Won't you please shine down on,
please shine down on, please shine down on me-e-e!

We started our unit on 3D shapes this week as well so I created this alien shape sorting game.

Transportation Trace and Copy

We completed our unit on transportation... I hope you found some new ideas to use in your program!  I created this set of transportation trace and copy activities for my children to use during our transportation unit.  Enjoy!
