Pet Week

Pet week was a lot of fun.  We had two live pets visit - the children always enjoy it when Patches visits the playroom (she's getting old so doesn't make appearances as often as she used to!) and Sebastian was a big hit.

We discussed caring for our pets and their needs.  Here are some of the crafts we created.

Cat Faces -

Golf Ball Painting on Harry -

Fish Bowl Watercolour Painting -

And colouring Sebastian - they decorated him with some really cool shells!

Here are some of the songs we enjoyed throughout the week...

I have a dog.
And his name is Rags.
He eats so much that his tummy sags,
His ears flip flop
And his tail wig wags.
And when he walks, he goes zig zag.

He goes flip flop, wibble wobble, zig zag.
He goes flip flop, wibble wobble, zig zag.
He goes flip flop, wibble wobble, zig zag.
My dog Rags, he loves to play.
He rolls around in the mud all day.
And when I call him, "Hey Rags!"
He won't obey.
He turns around and runs the other way.

He goes flip flop, wig wag, zig zag.
He goes flip flop, wig wag, zig zag.
He goes flip flop, wig wag, zig zag.
I love Rags and he loves me.

My Poodle

I have a little poodle
His coat is silver grey
One day I thought I'd bathe him
To wash the dirt away.
I washed my little poodle
Then dried him with a towel
My poodle really liked his bath
He didn't even growl!

Sweet Kitty

Sweet kitty, soft kitty
Little ball of fur
Sweet kitty, soft kitty
Purr, purr, purr.

Sweet kitty, soft kitty
Little ball of fur
Sweet kitty, soft kitty
Purr, purr, purr.

We also listened to the story Harry the Dirty Dog and watched Franklin wants a Pet on YouTube.  I'm looking forward to continuing our animals theme unit with The Farm next week!

Pet Sentences

Well it must be winter in Southern Ontario because we went from being a wet sloppy mess straight into a deep freeze.  Good thing we have Pet Week to keep us busy!  Here's a sentence sorting game I created for the kiddies!

Happy Family Day

Hey everyone, sorry I've been MIA - it was a busy valentine's week with the kids.  They had so much fun at their party!!  I am enjoying a relaxing Family Day and gearing up for Pet Week at A Child's Place.  I wanted to share this addition game that I created for next week.

Winter Wonderland

We just finished our winter unit at A Child's Place.  Unfortunately, Mother Nature didn't co-operate very much, but we did manage to get one good snowfall and a couple of days when it wasn't raining or below -15 so we were able to play in the white stuff for a couple of the days.  It was mighty crazy... one day beautiful snowfall - built a snowman outside... the next, pouring rain.  Our Frosty was completely melted within 24 hours :( !

Here are some of the activities we enjoyed for winter.

I absolutely love puffy paint.  It is so easy to make (1 part shaving cream to an equal part white glue - mix together and paint!)  We used puffy paint to create the snowy ground on our paper and let dry.  Then the children cut out circles from white paper to build a snowman.  They added construction paper accessories and drew on faces.

We cut snowflakes from coffee filters and the fact that they are already a circle means all you have to do is fold in half and then thirds... then cut.

The children drew their own snowmen with markers.

I have a vast collection of winter books, but my favourite by far is Sadie and the Snowman by Allen Morgan.  You can listen to the story on You Tube.

When enjoying our snowy day, we made a small and large snowball and brought them inside.  We hypothesized about which snowball would melt faster and graphed the predictions.  The children also took a paper home to explain the experiment and discuss the results.

Here are some of the songs we enjoyed during the unit...

Mitten Song

Thumb's in the thumb hole
Fingers all together
This is the song we sing
In Mitten weather
It doesn't matter
If they're made of wool or leather
Thumb's in the thumb hole
And fingers go together!

Suzy Snowflake

Here comes Suzy Snowflake
Dressed in a snow-white gown
Tap, tap, tappin' at your windowpane
To tell you she's in town.
Here comes Suzy Snowflake
Soon you will hear her say
"Come out everyone and play with me
I haven't long to stay.
If you want to make a snowman
I'll help you make one, two, three
If you wanna take a sleigh ride
The ride's on me."
Here comes Suzy Snowflake
Look at her tumblin' down
Bringing joy to every girl and boy
Suzy's come to town.

Build A Little Snowman (sung to:I'm A Little Teapot)

Build a little snowman starting with it's feet
Pack on lots of snow and make him nice and neat
Then you roll a big 'round ball, put it right on top
But then the sun may come out and make your snowman hot
He drips and he drips and he drips all day
Looking for my snowman what do I see?
Nothing but a puddle where he used to be!
