Hey everyone... it's FRIDAY!!!!  Yah!!!  I wanted to share my newest creation.  A friend on a group was looking for a banner for her bulletin board display and I thought... hmmm... haven't made any of those - so decided it was time to rectify that ;)!  Here is my Happy Holidays banner - it was fun to create so I will be adding a Banners section to my website soon.

Something Smells

Last week we had fun exploring our 'sense of smell'.  The children really enjoyed painting scented pictures (sorry I forgot to take pictures!)... I added pepperment extract to green paint and vanilla extract to white paint.  Everyone (but me) liked the vanilla scent better.  It was especially fun for my youngest two as it was their first time painting with brushes... the giggles were priceless!

Here are some songs we enjoyed at circle time...

On My Face I Have A Nose (Sung To: "Old MacDonald Had a Farm")

On my face I have a nose;
I Use it all the time.
When I sniff it I can tell
Vinegar from lime.
With a sniff, sniff here,
And a sniff, sniff there,
Here a sniff, there a sniff,
Everywhere a sniff, sniff.
On my face I have a nose;
Use it all the time!

I Stuck My Head In A Little Skunk's Hole

Well I stuck my head in a little skunk's hole
The little skunk said, "Well bless my soul.
Take it out, take it out, take it out... remove it!"
Well I didn't take it out and the little skunk said,
"You'd better take it out or you'll wish you had.
Take it out, take it out, take it out - (PEEEE-YOUUUUU)... I removed it!"

We identified items of food using our sense of smell while playing...

I also have a card version of the game on my website.  If you click on Themes and then Five Senses, you will find more activities and links to printouts available on my site.  I also have an emergent reader 'I Can Smell' available to download and print.  All of my printables are easily accessed by clicking on the Free Printables button.

Word Families Present Sorting

After this post, we'll return to our regularly planned curriculum!  This new set 'Christmas Kids' is hot off the presses and I just had to create a game with them :).  I will post about our 5 senses Smell Unit tomorrow (promise!).  Enjoy the new game!

Counting to 30

Hey everyone... hope you all had a wonderful weekend.  It was bea-u-tiful here in Southern Ontario with record breaking temperatures... a balmy 17 in November!!!  The rain moved in this afternoon, but at least we were able to enjoy another warm day this morning.

My group is now working on identifying numbers and counting objects to 30 so I decided to create a new puzzle game for them to play while mastering this new skill.  I hope you can use it with your kiddo's too :).

5 Senses

It's been a busy week here and the children are enjoying the start of our major unit on The 5 Senses.  I have decided to break the unit up over 5 weeks so we can thoroughly explore each of the senses.

This week, we explored the sense of touch.  We explored play dough, fingerpainted and painted with puffy paint.  I love the texture of puffy paint when it is dry!  It is so incredibly easy to make... mix equal parts white glue and shaving cream.  It does take several days to dry.

Check out my website for emergent readers and a lapbook.  We created a touch booklet - the printout for this is in the 5 senses lapbook on my website if you want a copy.  We used a cotton ball for soft, sandpaper for rough, bubble wrap for bumpy, a sparkly pipecleaner for prickly, and tin foil for smooth.

You Tube has some great videos available to enhance this unit.  I know that You Tube is blocked for some schools, but you can save the video's to your hard drive by copy/pasting the url of the video at Save Media - .

Barney & Friends 1-2-3-4-5 Senses

Barney's 5 Senses Song

Hi-5 Senses

I Have 10 Fingers
I have ten little fingers, and they all belong to me
I can make them do things, would you like to see?
I can shut them tight
I can open them wide
I can put them together
I can make them hide
I can make them fly high
I can make them fly low
I can fold them like this and hold them just so.
