Smore Please

I'm not a huge fan of marshmallows or graham crackers, but saw a pin for some Smores Bark and thought... have to make that for my daughter (who loves smores)!  I did change the recipe because I didn't like the fact that graham crackers were the base and also it used dark chocolate (not happening!) so here is my revised rendition of smores bark and yes... it was DELICIOUS!!!

Melt milk chocolate chips in the microwave on medium heat - I didn't measure, but poured them in a cereal bowl about 3/4 full... so guessing about a cup.  I put them in for 1 minute and then stir until the remaining chips melt.  You may have to return them to the microwave for a few more seconds.  Place parchment paper in the bottom of a 9x9 inch pan and pour the milk chocolate onto the parchment paper and spread it evenly.  Melt more milk chocolate (same amount) in microwave while you assemble the squares.  Place graham cracker squares on top of the chocolate pressing down slightly.  Sprinkle mini marshmallows on top.  Then cover with the second batch of milk chocolate.  Place in the fridge to set.  Take out of the fridge and place the whole thing on a cutting board to cut into squares.  The squares do not need to be refrigerated after it sets.  That's it folks... total prep time is about 5 minutes + setting time - no fuss, no muss - and only 2 bowls to clean... which if you lick clean only takes a quick rinse and into the dishwasher ;).

Cutest Spiders Ever

Styrofoam Spiders Craft

I just love these guys... they looked so cute adorning the cubbies!

Cut a styrofoam ball in half and paint with acrylic paint.  Cut pipecleaners in half and bend up one end to create feet.  When the paint has dried, poke holes with the sharp end of the pipecleaner where the legs are to go and add a dab of glue (we used a low temperature glue gun) before poking them into the holes.  Bend the legs so the spider will stand then add googly eyes.

Spider Hats

Today we made our spider hats... how cute is this little spider!

Cut out a band from black construction paper to fit around child's head.  Cut out circles for the eyes and 8 strips for legs.  Have children fold the legs accordian style.  Staple the legs to either side of the spider and glue the eyes on the front.

Spiders

We have started our spider unit this week... the children are very excited and already my one little girl who was TERRIFIED of spiders told me today outside when she was looking for webs and spiders that she just LOVES spiders.... YAH!  Here are some of the songs we are learning with the unit.

The Eency Weency Spider (new rendition)

The eency weency spider crawled up on (child's name)'s head
He crawled all around, then used it for a bed
He crawled down (his/her) back and jumped down to the floor
Then the eency weency spider crawled underneath the door.

 Spiders

Spiderlings hatch from eggs.
Each one has eight tiny legs.
A spider has more eyes than you.
Most have eight, and you have two.
A spider has two body parts.

Across its web it quickly darts.
From a spider's spinnerets
Sticky spider silk jets.
Spiders feel the frantic tugs,
Of their favorite food; it's bugs!

The Speedy Spider  (Sung to: "Oh Susannah")
I was sitting in my room one day
When it came right through the door.
A spider sped right by me;
Went racing 'cross the floor.

Oh, that spider! Oh how it scared me so.
But spiders can be good friends. And so I let it go.
I watched it crawl up on the wall,
To find a spot just right.
It spun a web so beautiful.
And then went out of sight.

Oh, that spider! Oh how it scared me so.
But spiders can be good friends. And so I let it go.
Now bugs and flies don't scare me,
For I know that it is true
That a spiderweb is good to have,
Bugs stick to it like glue.

Oh, that spider! Oh how it scared me so.
But spiders can be good friends. And so I let it go.

There's A Spider on the Floor  (Raffi)
There’s a spider on the floor, on the floor.
There’s a spider on the floor, on the floor.
There’s a spider on the floor,
Who could ask for anything more?
There’s a spider on the floor, on the floor.

Now the spider’s on my leg; on my leg.
Oh the spider’s on my leg, on my leg.
Oh, he’s really big!
This old spider on my leg.
There’s a spider on my leg, on my leg.

Now the spider’s on my stomach, on my stomach.
Oh, the spider’s on my stomach, on my stomach.
Oh, he’s just a dumb old lummock,
this old spider on my stomach .
There’s a spider on my stomach, on my stomach.

Now the spider’s on my neck, on my neck.
Oh the spider’s on my neck, on my neck.
Oh, I’m gonna be a wreck,
I’ve got a spider on my neck.
There’s a spider on my neck, on my neck.

Now the spider’s on my face, on my face.
Oh, the spider’s on my face, on my face.
Oh, what a big disgrace,
I’ve got a spider on my face.
There’s a spider on my face, on my face.

Now the spider’s on my head, on my head.
Oh, the spider’s on my head, on my head.
Oh, I wish that I were dead.
I’ve got a spider on my head.
There’s a spider on my head, on my head.

But he jumps off. NOW…

There’s a spider on the floor, on the floor.
There’s a spider on the floor, on the floor.
Who could ask for any more,
than a spider on the floor.

There’s a spider on the floor, on the floor.

Scarecrow Fun

We are enjoying our scarecrow unit SO much!  Here are some of the activities we have had fun with this week.

I’m A Little Scarecrow (Sung to: "I'm A Little Teapot")
I’m a little scarecrow
Stuffed with hay
Here I stand in a field all day.
When I see the crows,
I like to shout,
"Hey! You crows, you better get out!"

Scarecrow Chant

Scarecrow, scarecrow
How scary can you be?
You scared away the crows
But you can't scare me!
No, you can't scare me!

Two Little Black Birds
Two little blackbirds
sitting on a wall
One named Peter
And one named Paul
Fly away Peter
Fly away Paul
Come back Peter
Come back Paul
Fly away, fly away
Fly away all.

We made these cute little scarecrow heads that I found on the Easy Child Crafts website.  We stuffed the bags with scrunched up newspaper and I traced the kids' hands for the hay under the hat.  You can get the pattern for the face and hat here.
