One Potato, Two Potato

Wow... 2 blogs in one day - how do I do it?!!!  I know everyone has been anxiously awaiting the new St. Patrick's Day graphics and I'm happy to announce they are on the site.  I hope you enjoy and have as much fun creating with them as I have :).  I will be posting St. Patrick's Day games and activities over the next week or so.  We are going to be using Jamie O'Rourke and the Big Potato by Tomie dePaola as our author study book for the next couple of weeks... what's not to love about a giant spud!

Cookie's Craft Bag

We completed our Cookie cat bags today and they are so cute!  I adapted the idea from this Halloween Cat craft.

First cut a U shape from the paper bag to create the ears then paint all sides black.

We added googly eyes, pipecleaner whiskers, cotton balls, and a pom pom nose.
Because of the weight of the items, I assisted the children with a glue gun.

Print the attachment below, have the children trace the days of the week and cut out the cards.
Have children fold the days of the week cards and add them to 'Cookie'.
We also attached a construction paper handle so they could carry their game.

Have fun playing Cookie's Days of the Week Game!

Cookie's Week

We are starting our author study on Tomie dePaola this week.  One of my favourite stories for teaching the days of the week is Cookie's Week written by Cindy Ward and illustrated by Tomie dePaola.  Here is an activity sheet I created as a story extension for the book.

Surprise!

I love surprises... spur of the moment surprises and ones that you look forward to with anticipation... knowing it's coming, but not sure exactly what it is! Here is the final emotions printable to add to your theme collection.  I also will give you a little heads up on a surprise that I have brewing... I've been busy drawing additional clipart to add to my St. Patrick's Day set and with those, have been creating some fun new activities and games that I will be posting over the next couple of weeks.  Stay tuned!

Who's Afraid?

Hey everyone... happy sunny Saturday!  In the light of day, many things that scare us simply vanish.  We sometimes feel silly about what terrified us just hours before.  Fear is sometimes understandable and sometimes seemingly ridiculous, but there is no denying that it takes us in it's grip and can often take our breath away.  Helping children verbalize and discuss their fears goes a long way in helping them cope with whatever scares them.  I hope you find this writing prompt useful in opening up the doors of communication.

Clobber Clay

We had so much fun making this clay today.... well the best part was when they asked me what they were making and I said 'LUNCH'... the expressions were priceless!

Simply mix 2 heaping tablespoons flour, 2 full tablespoons salt, 3 tablespoons water (add a little more if needed).  Have children measure and mix the dry ingredients and then add their water then keep stirring until it clumps together.  Once it is clumped, they can dump it out on the table for kneading.  When we were at the kneading stage, we chanted...

Squish it, squeeze it
Squish it, squeeze it
Get our angries out.
Squish it, squeeze it
Squish it, squeeze it
Get our angries OUT!

Mad Writing Prompt

We are reading the book That Makes Me Mad by Steven Kroll this week.  There has been a lot of discussion on appropriate ways to deal with anger.  The song I Get Angry has been a fun addition to our circle time talks.  Simply click on the 'Download Song' link on the right hand side where it says Place Order to listen online!

As an added activity, I created another writing prompt for this emotion that our little ones need assistance in getting control of ;).

I created this memory game to assist the children in recognizing and identifying different feelings.  Enjoy!

Sad Writing Prompt

Well it's a beautiful sunny Sunday morning and I'm feeling anything but sad :).  Last night we went to the theatre and saw Anne of Green Gables - it was AWESOME... the person who played Anne was absolutely amazing on stage.  I went in not knowing much about the play... I'd heard of Anne of Green Gables - I'd think most, if not all, Canadians have and watched the cartoon version when my daughter was younger, but had never read the book.  The play was witty and had some pretty amazing lines - Anne was ever so dramatic and had us laughing-out-loud many times!  There was a moment of sadness near the end so it is to that moment in the play that I will dedicate these writing sheets.

Out of the Mouths of Babes

Oh my goodness... kids do say the darndest things.  I'm listening to my two 4 year olds playing in the dramatic play area.  One is Mommy, the other the baby.

Baby... I love you Mommy.
Mommy... I know baby - I love you too sometimes.  (SOMETIMES>>>> she seriously said that ROFL!!!!)

Same 2 children.

Baby... Mommy can I have a drink?
Mommy.... Sure baby - Mommy will get it - I am your slave.  (SLAVE!!!??? >>>>> oh this Mommy was on a roll!)

Try and keep a straight face with that play going on.  I can't wait to see what they come up with this afternoon!  In response to the humour of this morning, here is a writing activity to use with your children :).

Feelings

Feelings... oh, oh, oh feelings!  How am I feeling today... TIRED!!!  Wowsers what a busy day... and it's only Wednesday - at least I will get to relax this evening in front of the t.v. for the season premiere of Survivor!

As a continuation of the love and happiness of Valentine's Day, my group will be exploring emotions.  During the next couple of weeks, I will be sharing our activities and the printables I create.  My first creation is a little emergent reader to identify 5 common feelings.... Enjoy!

Happy Valentine's Day

Happy Valentine's Day!  What a wonderful day with the kids.  Everyone dressed in red or pink or hearts :).  Valentine cards and treats were exchanged.  I hope everyone had a wonderful party and felt 'the love'!  I thought I would post a few links to colouring pages for a quick activity.

No-one can celebrate Valentine's Day like Clifford... he's RED all year 'round!
Dora and Boots give each other a Valentine's Day hug.
How cute is Piglet with his heart balloon!

Valentine Bookmarks

Two for the price of one post... I was going to wait until tomorrow to blog these, but then thought that doesn't give much time to prepare for the big day!  I didn't want to leave anyone out so I created this set of bookmarks for children to hand out as an alternative to valentine cards or for teachers to give to their students.  These were also created with the wonderful clipart purchased from DJ Inkers

Big Bookmarks for Little Hands

Valentine's day is the perfect time to present your little one with a new book.  I created these large bookmarks to go with such a gift - they are the perfect size for little hands and big books :)  These were created with the wonderful clipart purchased from DJ Inkers.

Valentine Bears Flash Cards

Hey everybody... I had a request for valentine bears alphabet flashcards so here you are :).  We can all thank Tracy for this alternative game/activity.  With my crew, I like to use the alphabet flashcards with the children to see if they remember their letters, but I also use them with the older children who know their letters as an activity to place the cards in alphabetical order.

I just love to read all the wonderful comments on my blog, but just a heads up... if you post a comment for the purpose of soliciting business for your website, it will be removed.  There... got that over with now on to the fun stuff.
